Speak Bravely

“Moving On” by Lily Carter

Moving On

Dear Girls,

In elementary school

We’re having sleepovers every weekend

It’s a group of 10 best friends who tell each other everything

begging our parents to let us play for 5 more minutes

With no drama,

no gossip

no lies

At least not yet

I’ve found my “true friends”

Dear Girls,

In middle school

Why’d you say that about me?

I thought we were friends

Why would you point that out in me?

Now that’s all I see when I look in the mirror

They got in a fight so we have to take sides,

sitting in the principal’s office sorting out who said what about who

I miss when there was

no drama

no gossip and

no lies

Dear Girls,

In high school,

I was sad, lonely, and hurt

I wasn’t happy with my friends

because I didn’t know what “true friends” meant

Then I met them

and I knew they were my people

The girls who don’t have drama,

The girls who won’t gossip and

The girls who don’t lie

The girls that make me feel like a new shiny person

one who was once rusted

The girls who helped me find myself and move on

Dear Girls,

who gossiped and lied

I hope you move on too because

moving on is like the sun finally shining through the clouds after its been raining all week

The warmth taking over the gray that once consumed you

I hope you feel the warmth

I hope you find the people who make you new and shiny too

I hope you won’t gossip and lie anymore and

I hope you move on
